In the 18th centure, the first coffee plants were already growing in the terroirs if Brazil, Sao Tome e Principe, and Angola. Over the years - and after indepence of Brazil - Portugal started to protect itself as an importer of Arabicas and an exporter of Angolan Robusta. At the beginning of 20th century, coffee was already considered "the biggest treasure of Angola" and in the empire's capital, Lisbon, a strong regulation to classify the Portuguese colonial coffees was created.
